Julie Mencher, MSW is a psychotherapist in private practice and a pioneer in LGBT education, psychotherapy, and advocacy. She developed and held the position of Transgender Specialist at Smith College, a single-sex institution, over fifteen years ago. As a nationally recognized speaker and consultant, Ms. Mencher serves as a strategic advisor to organizations on gender diversity and sexuality. A member of the Smith College School of Social Work faculty for over twenty years, she was also a Visiting Scholar at the Stone Center at Wellesley College, where she founded the Lesbian Theory Group. Ms. Mencher lectures frequently on LGBT experience, eating disorders, trauma and women’s development. She trains graduate students and professionals in social work, psychology, and psychiatry. Ms. Mencher's private practice in psychotherapy and consultation is located in Northampton MA. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, including writing for Salon and Huffington Post.
